Privacy Policy

Last updated June 11, 2026

This policy explains what data DownwinderApp (“we”, “the app”) handles and why. We've tried to keep it short and honest. If anything is unclear, contact us (below).

The short version

We don't sell your data. The runs and preferences you create are stored in your own browser, not on our servers. The app does send a few requests to third-party data providers to do its job — explained below.

What we store on your device

Your saved runs and your unit preferences are kept in your browser's local storage, on the device you created them on. They stay on your device, are not transmitted to us, and you can remove them at any time by deleting a run in the app or clearing your browser's site data.

What gets sent to third parties

To show forecasts and let you search, the app contacts these services:

  • Place search — what you type in the search box is sent to LocationIQ to turn it into a location.
  • Forecasts — the coordinates of a point or run are sent to our server and on to Open-Meteo and USGS to retrieve weather, marine, and river data for that location.
  • Map tiles — your map view loads imagery from OpenFreeMap / OpenStreetMap.

These providers receive only what they need (a search term, or coordinates) and handle it under their own privacy policies, linked above. Like most web services, they and our hosting may log technical request information such as IP address for security and reliability.

Analytics and error reporting

We use privacy-respecting, cookieless tools to keep the app working and improve it — no advertising trackers, no cross-site tracking, and we never sell your data:

  • Analytics — aggregate, anonymous usage and performance (such as page views, device type, and approximate region) via Vercel Web Analytics. It uses no cookies and does not identify you.
  • Error reporting — when something breaks, a diagnostic report (the error, the page, and browser/device type) is sent to Sentry so we can fix it. We configure it to avoid collecting personal information.

The only thing the app stores in your browser is your own runs and preferences (see above) — not tracking cookies.

Children

DownwinderApp is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Your choices

  • Delete individual runs in the app, or clear your browser site data to remove everything stored locally.
  • Use the app without searching if you'd rather not send queries to the geocoder — you can tap the map directly.

Future features

When we add accounts and cross-device sync, this policy will be updated to describe what we store on our servers, how to access or delete your account, and any new providers involved. We'll note the change here.

Changes

We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected in the “last updated” date above.
